Hot Octopuss PleX With Flex Review
Following my glowing review of the Kurve, the lovely folks at Hot Octopuss offered to send me some other toys to sample. I left it up to them what to send as I like having the opportunity reviewing things I wouldn’t necessarily choose myself.
The first one I’m going talk about today is the PleX with Flex. Let’s check it out!
Hot Octopuss PleX with Flex
The Hot Octopuss PleX with Flex (hereinafter referred to as the PleX) is a slim, remote controlled vibrator marketed primarily as a butt plug.
The PleX comes in a smart black box covered in Hot Octopuss’s branding and tons of product info. No plastic to be found inside or outside aside from the small hygiene seal stickers. I love luxury brands that present their toys beautifully and with pride, while not producing excess waste. Hot Octopuss always really excel here.
Inside you get the PleX and it’s remote control, manuals and warranty information, a USB charging cable and a little branded storage bag.
Appearance wise, the PleX is everything I’d expect from a Hot Octopuss toy. The black, silicone, slightly bulbous shaft is svelte and smooth, the buttons are large and definable, and the base is comfortable to grip. So far, so good.
Like the Kurve, the PleX houses two motors with difference frequencies. The buzzier (but still great) Treble motor is in the tip and the rumbly Bass motor is (appropriately) towards the base. Both are a delight. There are five levels of intensity and an additional four pretty bog standard patterns if they’re your thing.
The main controls are right on the bottom of the base, where there are separate buttons to power on each motor and + and – buttons to control intensity. The main power button is on the edge which is an interesting design choice. When this is on a green light flashes to indicate the toy is ready to pair with the remote (more on that later) or you can choose to use the buttons on the toy instead.
At almost 5 inches in usable length, the PleX is a lot longer than what I expected which was a bit of a blow as I don’t really enjoy length in an anal toy. I don’t have a prostate and any stimulation past a certain depth feels either boring or uncomfortable. For its intended purpose, the PleX is wasted on me.
While I haven’t tried using the PleX itself as a butt plug, from past experience with other toys, I have some concerns about the shape. A good plug needs a short, thin neck to compliment a girthy bulb in order to stay put. The PleX doesn’t have a severe difference between its widest and narrowest point, making it a prime candidate for slipping out, or being violently fired across the bed depending what else you happen to be doing! Proceed with caution.
However, it is not a write off by any means!
Vaginismus and genital pain
I think Hot Octopuss are missing a trick by marketing the PleX explicitly for anal use.
The slim, gently tapered shape screams out to me as perfect for people with a vagina who struggle with penetration but want something decent to work up to. This could be due to medical conditions that cause genital pain, such as vaginismus or vulvodynia, or those recovering from vaginoplasty or other gender confirmation surgeries involving the vagina.
Some people with vaginas just prefer slimmer insertable toys in general and, at around the same circumference as two fingers, with its curved shape and awesome motors, the PleX is ideal.
The remote control and accessibility
The PleX’s remote control and I are not friends.
I don’t usually bother using remote controls with toys in general, and when I saw that I’d need a screwdriver to open the PleX’s in order to activate it, if it wasn’t for this review it would have gone back in the box! There is a plastic disc which needs to be removed from the battery case before it’ll work.
Oh, not just any screwdriver, I might add – no, one of those tiny Christmas Cracker ones! I am a girl who likes her tools and just happened to have one lying about, but not everyone does. This screw is MINUTE, so of course I immediately dropped it into the carpet by accident. Great.
Minus a hundred points for accessibility! This will be a problem for anyone with a vision impairment or fine motor skills problems. I need to wear glasses and can be clumsy during a flare up – that was enough of a struggle.
Note: My contact at Hot Octopuss reached out to say that the tiny screw is there for health and safety purposes, and this may become industry standard.
The appeal of remote control sex toys is being able to use them hands free, which is great for when you want to do other things with your hands or let a partner take control. I also see them as great for folks who struggle to reach to operate toys, be it due to anything from back or arm problems to a larger belly.
I find the base of the PleX a bit awkward to navigate as the buttons are positioned right on the bottom, so they are never visible once inserted into the hole of your choice! The remote helps with this, but I found that it doesn’t work consistently. Sometimes I have to stretch point the remote directly between my legs to the point where I might as well just use to buttons on the toy instead.
What about the “flex”?
Given “flex” is actually in the product name, I was expecting a lot more than what I got.
The instruction manual illustrates the base as being able to “flex” 90 degrees in whatever direction you please? This is almost true.
What I don’t like is that it doesn’t feel quite natural. When bent, you can see the Bass motor pressing through the silicone skin which looks and feels wrong!
When I saw the image in the manual, I think I was expecting it to be posable (as I’ve seen in other toys such as the We-Vibe Nova 2) rather than what it is, which is essentially just having a little bit of wiggle room instead of being totally rigid.
The Hot Octopuss PleX is a perfectly fine vibrator. The quality is top notch and I can’t fault the vibrations,
The size and shape is ideal for anal and potentially prostate stimulation, however I wouldn’t consider it a butt plug as I have reservations about whether it would stay in properly or be comfortable to wear while moving around much.
The remote control and “flexing” capabilities were a disappointment.
However, I cannot commend it enough for people with a vagina who need or want a slimmer toy. If you like the idea of the Treble and Bass motors in the Kurve but don’t feel comfortable it’s size, give the PleX a try!
